Chris was born in Dar es Salaam in late 1956, leaving in 1960 for a year on Tarawa in what’s now Kiribati, before going to Nairobi.
They lived in Westlands, so the school would have been fairly local. They left for the UK in 1962.
Pupils were driven to the school by their parents early in the morning, with younger ones finishing and being picked up around midday. Chris remembers that when a parent drove in to collect a child, said child had to give a deep, theatrical bow (if a boy) or a low curtsey (if a girl) to the headmistress and one or two teachers who’d be sitting at an outside table. He seem to recall that the headmistress was a fearsome (to a five year old) Scots lady, possibly called Mrs Westerhouse, who was quite ready to rap a child’s knuckles with a ruler for any perceived misdemeanour.
The only pupil Chris can remember was Duncan Forbes, his age and a close neighbour.
A suggestion for the school is Kilimani Primary School.
Chis would be grateful for any information.
