Thurstan family Mother Margaret, Richard, Diana, David Chetham. Pete Dickie. Photo taken July '63 at Nyali, Mombasa.
Richard was born in 1949 in Nairobi and left in 1962 to school in Devon.
His parents and sisters came back in 1963.
His grandfather, James Mackay was a settler in 1911 and became President of the KFA in 1952 acting as host to the Queen Mother in 1952. Those of the farming community may know (of) him. His family lived for 10 years in Kiambu, outside Nairobi and latterly in Nyali, Mombasa in a property previously occupied by none other than Earnest Hemmingway. His father, Charles was an executive with Shell and his Mother, Margaret was a competitive tennis player.
Richard went to Kenton Prep school and was a border from the age of 7. His sister Jill and Diana went to Limuru, also as borders.
Kenton Prep school had an affiliation to the Kenya High School so the pupils were allowed to use their swimming pool though it meant 2 mile hike there and back.
Richard now lives in Preston Lancashire. His sister Jill lives in Devon and Diana lives in Somerset.
